Professor Michael Hemmings clinked his spoon against his glass to hush the murmured conversation along the banquet table. The elaborate banquet hall seemed larger when all the guests ceased talking. Professor Hemming’s voice sounded high and thin as it echoed around the room. “Welcome, everyone, to the annual Ancient History Faculty Dinner! I am honored to be your host tonight! Tonight can be a night of laughter, fun, and stories – even stories that aren’t about ancient history, for once!”
Appreciative laughter rippled through the guests.
“I just want to thank everyone for coming, and to say that it has been a pleasure working with each and every one of you. Here’s to another year of Ancient History at NYU!” Professor Hemmings raised his wineglass and the guests cheered as they followed his lead.
